Emoji Cupcakes for World Emoji Day

Did you know that the emoji is almost 22 years old? I had no idea! Obviously we haven't been blessed with the emoji for twenty odd years but it existed and has grown into the phenomenon that we use in our everyday lives. If that isn't incentive to keep going, I don't know what is. I mean if a yellow smiley face can achieve such great things then why can't we all?

Today is World Emoji Day. Why, you ask? Well it's all to do with that date on the calendar emojis on Apple devices. You might not have ever noticed (I certainly haven't) but that date is July 17th! So every July 17th, we now celebrate the wonderful world of emojis!

Why I Love Emojis

What feels like a million years ago now, us older folk were used to using text-based emoticons to share how we were feeling via text message. They were basically made out of punctuation marks such as colons and brackets. They weren't yellow or particularly exciting but they did the trick.

And then one day, along came the emoji and changed our world forever.

If you follow me on Twitter, you've probably already noticed that I love a good emoji. I throw them around abundantly. This is especially true in my real life Whatsapp conversations where I can squeeze in a dozen or two into one message.

I don't normally use emojis in my blog posts because I think that the writing conveys any emotions I'm trying to get across but since it's World Emoji Day, I figured I'd make an exception. ๐Ÿ˜‹

But which of the hundreds of emojis are my go-tos? Well, I've got that covered in this nifty little screenshot that shows my top 16 most frequently used emojis on Whatsapp.

If your name is Sherlock Holmes, you might deduce from these 16 emojis that I am a somewhat anxious mum to a toddler boy who is equal parts sweetheart and troublemaker. There's a lot of laughter in there and it's usually as a response to semi-stressful parenting situations like the jam tart incident. Parenting is all about your coping mechanisms.

Emoji Cupcakes

I chose to do this section as more of a showcase of my cake decorating skills than a recipe but if you must know...

Packet of Victoria Sponge Cake Mix (Co-op)
Medium eggs x 2
Icing sugar
Gel food colouring - yellow and black

In terms of equipment, I used two metal bowls, a fork to break the eggs, an electric mixer, a cupcake baking tray, 12 cupcake cases, an oven preheated to 150℃ and more spoons than I'd like to mention.

It probably took about 10 minutes to prep the cupcakes, 15 minutes to bake in the oven and then another 10 minutes after they'd cooled to decorate.

So here they are, my attempt at making emoji cupcakes captioned with the emoji they are supposed to represent:

Yummy! It's actually been a lot of fun writing this post so I hope that it's been equally enjoyable for you to read! What's your favourite emoji? Let me know in the comments below.
